The Pete Lien & Sons Shooting Sports Complex, located just north of Rapid City, is nearing completion and will officially open to the public on November 8. Operated by South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks, the facility will host its first shooting competition next week ahead of the grand opening.
Project Lead John Kanta says the complex is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region by attracting national-level matches. Construction began nearly two years ago, following initial planning in 2019.
The complex features two ranges: the north range includes 17 shooting positions and law enforcement training, while the south range offers 160 positions—140 of which are free to the public. Some areas will require an annual pass, but key features like the 50-, 100-, and 300-yard bays and the archery range will remain free.
In addition to recreational use, the facility will offer free gun safety and handling classes, especially for first-time gun owners. Once open, it will become South Dakota’s largest and 21st public shooting range.
