South Dakota State Representative Heather Baxter has officially entered the race for Secretary of State, launching her campaign with a focus on election integrity and public trust.
Baxter, a Republican who represents District 34 in Pennington County, emphasized her commitment to ensuring secure and transparent elections. “Our elections must reflect the will of the people,” she said in a statement. “As Secretary of State, I will bring fresh leadership to the fight for accessibility, accountability, and security to ensure every South Dakotan’s voice is heard and every vote is counted publicly and accurately.”
She joins a competitive race that includes incumbent Secretary of State Monae Johnson, who is seeking re-election, and Terrence Davis, a former South Dakota State Trooper.
The Secretary of State oversees elections, business filings, and official records in South Dakota — a role that has gained heightened attention amid national debates over voting access and election security.
