The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) confirmed Monday that an autopsy has been completed for the 43-year-old Wolsey man who died after being arrested and restrained by Rapid City police Friday night. Toxicology results are still pending.
The man, whose name has not been released, was apprehended after fleeing from officers and allegedly acting combative. Police say he was placed in a WRAP restraint system, spit mask, and padded helmet before being transported to jail, where he was found unresponsive and later died at the hospital.
DCI continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the man was in a police vehicle and still restrained when he became unresponsive. His identity will be released after next of kin are notified.
