CUSTER COUNTY, S.D. — A bat collected at Jewel Cave National Monument has tested positive for rabies, prompting park officials to remind visitors to avoid contact with bats and other wildlife.
The live bat was found along the park’s Historic Lantern Tour route. Officials said no human contact with the animal has been reported.
Rabies is a serious viral disease that can be fatal if not treated promptly after exposure. Health officials are advising anyone who may have come into contact with a bat while visiting Jewel Cave National Monument to seek medical attention immediately and contact the South Dakota Department of Health.
Park officials are working closely with the South Dakota Department of Health and the National Park Service Office of Health and Safety to monitor the situation and ensure appropriate public health measures are in place.
Visitors are encouraged to observe wildlife from a safe distance and report any unusual animal behavior to park staff. Officials stress that bats play an important role in the ecosystem, but they should never be handled or approached by the public.
No changes to park operations have been announced at this time.
