PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota’s medical cannabis program added nearly 4,000 registered patients over the past year, with enrollment climbing to 19,375 users as of June 30, 2026, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.
Medical Cannabis Program Administrator Whitney Brunner told the Legislature’s Medical Marijuana Oversight Committee that the state is also preparing to launch digital registry ID cards for patients by next summer as part of a new software system designed to streamline licensing, registration and inspections.
The number of registered patients increased from 14,843 in 2025, reflecting continued growth in the program since South Dakota voters approved medical marijuana in 2020.
Lawmakers on the oversight committee welcomed the move to digital ID cards, which have been a priority for both legislators and patients. Health officials also said they are reviewing potential rule changes requested by the cannabis industry and have updated the program’s website.
