PIERRE, S.D. – After experiencing more than 1,000 security breaches over the past five years, South Dakota is increasing its efforts to combat cyber threats with a $7 million investment in cybersecurity programs and infrastructure.
Recent cyberattacks affecting local governments in Pennington County, Rapid City, and Mitchell have highlighted the growing risks facing public agencies and the importance of protecting sensitive data and government operations.
Rather than accepting millions of dollars in available federal cybersecurity grants, state leaders have chosen to fund initiatives through state resources, including programs such as SecureSD and Project Boundary Fence. The programs are designed to strengthen network security, improve threat detection, and enhance the state’s ability to respond to cyber incidents.
Officials say prevention remains a top priority, with continued investments in cybersecurity systems and employee training aimed at reducing the likelihood of successful attacks.
