The South Dakota Department of Corrections is investigating the death of a 25-year-old inmate. Kaleb Lukkes, was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday at the state prison in Sioux Falls. Lukkes, was serving time for aggravated assault, and is the third inmate to die within a two-day span.
DOC Secretary Kellie Wasko confirmed the incident is being “aggressively investigated” in coordination with the Division of Criminal Investigation and the department’s Office of the Inspector General.
On Monday, 57-year-old Keith McLain died of an apparent suicide, also found unresponsive in his cell. The third death, 64-year-old Frank Twiggs, occurred Wednesday in a comfort care setting at the same facility. Twiggs was serving a sentence from Pennington County for first-degree burglary.
Lukkes’ death marks the 15th reported offender fatality in the state prison system this year.
Meanwhile, KeloLand news is reporting that the Attorney General’s Office has confirmed that the DCI is investigating an incident that occurred Thursday on the Penitentiary campus. More details on this story are forthcoming.
