PIERRE, S.D. – Governor Larry Rhoden has awarded 82 grants totaling $90 million to help modernize health care technology, strengthen cybersecurity, and improve data sharing for rural and underserved communities across South Dakota.
The funding comes through the federal Rural Health Transformation initiative and follows a competitive application process that drew 144 requests seeking a combined $336 million.
Funded projects include electronic health record upgrades, digital equipment improvements, cybersecurity enhancements, and technology-based workforce training. Major initiatives will support digital care coordination platforms, statewide cybersecurity programs, remote patient monitoring, virtual reality clinical training, and advanced digital health innovation labs.
State officials say the investments are aimed at improving access to care, reducing hospitalizations, supporting rural providers, and helping health organizations adopt emerging technologies while keeping patient data secure.
