RAPID CITY, S.D. – Pennington County residents who received temporary vehicle registrations because of this summer’s cybersecurity incident have until Aug. 31 to complete their transactions and avoid potential penalties.
The Treasurer’s Office says the deadline applies only to customers whose motor vehicle transactions were interrupted by the cyberattack and who were issued temporary paper registrations. It does not affect temporary permits issued through dealerships or under normal circumstances.
Officials remind vehicle buyers that South Dakota law requires title transfers within 45 days of purchase. Customers who miss that requirement could face interest charges and penalties.
The county has gradually restored services since the cyberattack, with motor vehicle transactions resuming July 13 and property tax services restarting Aug. 12.
The Treasurer’s Office now operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents are encouraged to arrive by 3 p.m. and not wait until the final days before the Aug. 31 deadline to complete their paperwork.
