Governor Larry Rhoden and 24 other governors have called on Senate leaders to prevent a government shutdown by passing a clean, short-term funding extension. In a letter addressed to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and other key Senate figures, the governors urged swift action to keep the government operating beyond the September 30 deadline.
“A shutdown is neither sustainable nor responsible,” the governors wrote, emphasizing that the proposed extension is a bipartisan measure free of political riders. They warned that a shutdown would have serious consequences nationwide—impacting military pay, emergency services, senior care, and food assistance programs.
The funding extension has already passed the House with bipartisan support and now awaits Senate approval. Governors from states including Texas, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, and Virginia joined Rhoden in signing the letter.
