The South Dakota Department of Public Safety announced the third set of saturation patrols in the Sioux Falls area concluded September 19 as part of Operation: Prairie Thunder. Patrols included members of the Highway Patrol in coordination with city, county, and federal law enforcement.
The 2-day operation resulted in 51 individuals taken into custody, 34 of which were on drug related charges. Officials report 161 total drug charges with 61 felonies. Also reported were 3 parole violations and one probation violation.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made 4 contacts resulting in 1 person in custody and identified and apprehended 2 people on cartel and gang related charges.
The operation also resulted in 343 traffic citations, 329 warnings and 2 DUI arrests.
Operation: Prairie Thunder has two main components:
- A targeted anti-crime initiative in the Sioux Falls metro to interdict drugs, investigate gang activity, hold parole absconders accountable,
- Deter lawlessness; and to support the work of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to secure our borders.
