RAPID CITY, S.D. – Drivers in the Rapid City area should prepare for several road projects and traffic impacts over the next few weeks, including lane closures on West Main Street, ongoing work near Piedmont and continued construction on Highway 385.
Beginning August 24, crews will close the far-right westbound lane on West Main Street to replace concrete from an abandoned water service line. The project is expected to continue through September 7, weather permitting.
Meanwhile, reconstruction of the Interstate 90 Exit 46 interchange near Piedmont remains underway. Traffic on I-90 is reduced to one lane in each direction as crews build a new interchange bridge and realign nearby roads. Officials expect paving work and lane closures to continue through November.
On Highway 385 between Pactola Dam and Calumet Road, major construction work is largely complete, but drivers are still being urged to use caution. The roadway currently has an oiled surface that can become slick when wet, with final paving scheduled for summer of 2027.
In addition, Pennington County will host its free Roads and Rescue Experience on September 10 at the county highway department in Rapid City. The family-friendly event will give residents a chance to explore road equipment and emergency vehicles, meet first responders, and learn more about county services.
