RAPID CITY, S.D. – A former Rapid City gymnastics coach has been sentenced to 10 years and one month in federal prison after pleading guilty to a child exploitation charge.
26-year-old Hayden Sengua was sentenced Monday in federal court on one count of receiving child pornography. Prosecutors said Sengua admitted to receiving more than 15,000 illegal files beginning in 2018.
During the sentencing hearing, Sengua expressed remorse and said he hoped the victims would be able to heal. Federal prosecutors stated that no children at the gymnastics center where Sengua worked were harmed.
U.S. District Judge Camela Theeler said the large volume of material involved in the case, along with Sengua’s access to children through his coaching position, were factors in imposing a sentence near the upper end of the federal guideline range.
