RAPID CITY, S.D. – A South Dakota Mines student-athlete is being recognized for his quick actions after helping save a teenager from a burning vehicle in Texas.
Junior football captain and mechanical engineering major Jameson Mallon-Echols witnessed a crash in Houston on June 11th when a vehicle crossed a median and wrecked. He immediately pulled over, called 911, and rushed to help.
After assisting two teenagers out of the vehicle, Mallon-Echols worked with another bystander to free the 16-year-old driver, who was trapped inside as flames began spreading beneath the seat. The pair eventually pulled the teen to safety just moments before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.
The driver survived but suffered serious injuries, including a broken spine and the loss of a leg. Mallon-Echols later met the teenager and his family, who thanked him for helping save their son’s life.
The Hardrocker football captain says he doesn’t consider himself a hero, adding that he simply did what anyone should do when someone needs help.
