At a town hall meeting in Whitewood on Tuesday evening, Meade School District Superintendent Wayne Wormstadt outlined a series of proposed changes aimed at addressing a significant budget deficit.
Among the proposals: closing the elementary schools in Hereford and Atall, and relocating Whitewood Elementary’s fifth-grade class to Sturgis Williams Elementary. Wormstadt emphasized that the moves are driven by the need for greater fiscal efficiency.
The district is currently facing a $1.25 million budget shortfall. According to data shared during the presentation, only three schools in the district are operating at a net profit. Wormstadt warned that the financial strain could impact key programs at Sturgis Brown High School, including business and music.
