South Dakota lawmakers say residents need confidence that steps are being taken to prevent another major government network failure like the one in August. Officials told a legislative committee the outage stemmed from mislabeled wiring in a Department of Transportation server room in Pierre, which damaged an $80,000 network switch and its backup—disrupting key state systems for nearly two business days.
To prevent future incidents, the state plans to relabel wiring, enhance system redundancy, and bolster backup power for critical services.
