RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Common Council has approved several changes to the proposed 2027 city budget during a special session this week.
Among the revisions, council members cut $700,000 from the Council contingency fund to reduce reliance on undesignated cash and trimmed $100,000 from the mayor’s office budget.
The council also added funding for several city services, including a new planner and code enforcement officer in Community Development, $182,523 for Rapid Transit System driver pay, and funding to fully support four new Parks Department positions.
Additional money was approved for the Canyon Lake Activity Center, the Minneluzahan Senior Center, Parks Department professional services, and emergency planning efforts.
Council members also reduced funding for the city’s 2027 Independence Day celebration, cutting the allocation from $500,000 to $100,000.
With the changes approved, the first reading of the 2027 budget is now scheduled for the September 8th Common Council meeting, which was moved back a day because of the Labor Day holiday.
