CUSTER, S.D. – It was a busy Saturday for Custer County Search and Rescue, as volunteers responded to three separate emergencies across the southern Black Hills.
The first call came just before 11 a.m., when a horseback rider was injured in a fall south of Custer. The rider was airlifted to Rapid City by Life Flight after rescuers secured a landing zone with assistance from the Argyle Fire Department.
Later in the afternoon, crews responded to a hiker suffering from suspected heat exhaustion on Trail 9. Because the hiker was near the end of the route, rescuers were able to reach the person by vehicle.
The final call came shortly before 8 p.m. at Wind Cave National Park, where a lost hiker contacted 911. GPS coordinates from the call helped ground crews quickly locate the individual.
Search and Rescue officials credited those involved for carrying adequate supplies and calling for help early.
Custer County Search and Rescue is a 100 percent volunteer organization and provides rescue services at no cost to those in need.
