RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City’s sales tax collections remained strong in June, with growth reported across most sectors of the local economy.
According to a report from City Finance Director Daniel Ainslie, the city’s general two percent sales tax revenue increased 6.6 percent compared to June of last year. Overall collections for the first half of 2026 are running 5.7 percent ahead of budget projections.
Tourism-related tax collections grew at a much slower pace, increasing just 0.5 percent from June 2025. Even so, sales tax receipts for the city’s Capital Improvement Fund and Vision Fund also posted gains.
City officials say the strong revenues are encouraging, but costs for services, infrastructure maintenance and improvements to roads, parks and public facilities continue to rise.
The sales tax report will be presented to the Rapid City Legal and Finance Committee during its meeting Wednesday at City Hall.
Sales tax revenues help fund core city services, infrastructure projects and quality-of-life investments throughout the community.
