The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR), in partnership with the South Dakota Soybean Checkoff, has launched a statewide initiative to collect and safely dispose of firefighting foams containing PFAS—harmful “forever chemicals” known to contaminate soil and water.
Participating fire departments will receive a 5-gallon container of SoyFoam, a soy-based, environmentally friendly alternative developed through Soybean Checkoff research. The exchange supports firefighter safety, reduces environmental impact, and boosts demand for locally grown soybeans.
“This partnership helps protect South Dakota’s natural resources by removing PFAS before they pose a threat,” said DANR Secretary Hunter Roberts.
DANR’s Inspection, Compliance, and Remediation Division will oversee logistics and ensure proper disposal at approved hazardous waste facilities. A similar 2020 effort collected nearly 3,900 gallons of PFAS foam from 36 departments and one airport.
