The South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) announced that the distribution of November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will hinge on decisions made by Congress later this week.
DSS said it has begun preparing partial benefits, a process that requires several days of system programming and federal approval. The department is also monitoring the potential reopening of the federal government.
Approximately 75,000 South Dakotans rely on SNAP. The USDA had previously instructed states to issue full November benefits following a federal judge’s ruling. However, conflicting announcements over the weekend left the timing unclear.
DSS said it will share updates as more information becomes available.
