RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City officials are recommending the purchase of 350 additional street light monitoring devices to improve oversight of the city’s lighting network.
The proposed $49,000 investment would expand the City’s existing Ubicell system, which monitors street light operations and traffic conditions in real time. Rapid City already has about 650 monitoring devices installed.
Public Works Director Mike Tice says the additional units would provide full coverage across the city’s street light grid, allowing crews to identify and respond to problems more quickly.
According to Tice, the system can detect outages caused by burned-out lights, vehicle crashes that damage poles, power surges, and other issues that affect street light operation.
City officials say the expanded network will improve visibility into system performance and help Public Works address problems before they become larger safety concerns.
The proposal is expected to be considered as part of upcoming city infrastructure and public works planning efforts.
