U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., announced that a stopgap bill to reopen the federal government includes $21.9 million in funding for South Dakota projects he requested.
The bill covers full-year appropriations for agriculture, the legislative branch, military construction, and veterans’ affairs. Seven of Rounds’ earmarks were included, with four focused on Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City to support future B-21 bomber operations totalling over $17 million dollars:
The Senate passed the bill Monday night with support from Rounds and Majority Leader John Thune. The House is expected to approve it soon, ending the longest federal shutdown in U.S. history.
Rounds emphasized the toll of the six-week shutdown, citing unpaid federal workers, disrupted benefits, and chaos in air travel.
