RAPID CITY, S.D. – As South Dakota’s big game hunting seasons get underway, Game, Fish and Parks is reminding hunters to make sure harvested animals are properly tagged and transported.
Officials say one common mistake involves confusing a hunting license with a transportation tag. The white strip at the top of a big game license is not the tag. Instead, hunters must remove and attach the colored tag from the bottom of the license to the harvested animal.
GFP says when transporting big game, the tagged leg or antler must remain with the meat. Hunters are also generally required to keep the head or attached sex organs with the meat unless the head has been properly checked and tagged at a chronic wasting disease station.
Transporting any part of a big game animal without proper tagging or a transportation permit is illegal.
Conservation officers say they regularly encounter violations involving untagged antlers, untagged meat, and missing identifying parts. Road checks will continue throughout the fall hunting season, and hunters are encouraged to review regulations before heading into the field.
