JOHNSON SIDING, S.D. – The Johnson Siding Volunteer Fire Department saw a busy month in August, responding to an above-average number of calls as the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally brought increased traffic and activity to the Black Hills.
Department officials say crews handled nine injury-related vehicle crashes during the month as tens of thousands of visitors traveled through the area.
Despite heightened fire danger this summer, wildfire activity remained lower than expected. Officials credited timely rainfall and ongoing public awareness efforts for helping reduce fire-related incidents.
In total, the department responded to 28 calls in August, including fire and smoke investigations, medical emergencies, service calls, and a water rescue or recovery incident. Crews also assisted with the Pure Pactola Swim event and provided aid to neighboring departments.
The department has also welcomed several new volunteers in recent months. Officials say recruitment remains a priority and encourage community members interested in serving to consider joining the volunteer force.
The department thanked area residents for their support and reminded everyone to remain alert and practice safe habits as summer comes to a close.
