SOUTH DAKOTA, S.D. – The South Dakota Democratic Party is urging voters to check their voter registration status after thousands switched political parties to participate in this summer’s gubernatorial runoff election.
Party officials say more than 5,000 voters changed their registration to take part in the runoff, but fewer than half have switched back. As of this week, about 2,000 voters had returned to their previous party affiliation.
Democratic leaders say the remaining registration changes could affect the party’s performance in the November election by reducing the number of registered Democrats eligible to support Democratic candidates.
The party is encouraging voters who wish to change their affiliation back to do so as soon as possible. Registration updates can be completed by filling out a voter registration form and submitting it to a county auditor’s office.
Officials are reminding voters to review their registration status ahead of the fall election season.
