RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City’s Youth City Council is helping raise awareness for suicide prevention with a special community event this week.
The group will host a “Chalk the Walk” event Wednesday evening outside City Hall as part of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Youth council members will gather to write messages of hope, encouragement, and support along sidewalks and public walkways around the building.
Organizers say the goal is to promote awareness, foster community connection and encourage conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.
The Rapid City Youth City Council was established in 2019 and consists of local high school students who work with city leaders on issues affecting young people in the community. Members attend City Council meetings, serve on committees, and provide a connection between city government and local youth.
The event follows a similar effort held in Rapid City last year and is intended to spread positive messages throughout the community. The public is invited to attend and support the effort.
