RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City golfer is getting the chance to return to the sport he loves thanks to a new piece of adaptive equipment arriving at Meadowbrook Golf Club.
The course will officially unveil a ParaGolfer sports wheelchair Wednesday. The motorized chair allows individuals with mobility challenges to stand and swing a golf club, opening the game to players who may not otherwise be able to participate.
The equipment was secured after Meadowbrook employee Martin LaGrande learned that his co-worker, Jon Englund, had stopped playing golf because of complications from multiple sclerosis. LaGrande contacted the Stand Up and Play Foundation, which helps provide adaptive equipment for individuals with disabilities, and worked with Meadowbrook staff to bring the specialized chair to Rapid City.
Englund is an Army National Guard veteran and former high school golf team captain who has been unable to play the game in recent years. Course officials say the ParaGolfer will not only benefit Englund, but also other golfers throughout the region who face mobility challenges.
