RAPID CITY, S.D. – A man has died after being taken into custody following a reported disturbance at a Rapid City apartment complex late Tuesday night.
Police say officers were called to 28 Racine Street around 11:15 p.m. for a report of a man acting erratically and possibly under the influence of drugs. During contact with officers, the man reportedly admitted to ingesting drugs.
Authorities say the situation escalated when the man became uncooperative and fought with officers, biting one officer and breaking the skin. Police deployed a Taser and eventually took the man into custody, placing him in a safety restraint device due to his continued behavior.
Medical personnel evaluated the man at the scene and reported his vital signs were good. However, after arriving at the Pennington County Jail, jail staff found him unresponsive in the patrol vehicle. CPR was started immediately, and he was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family members. Because the death occurred while the man was in custody, the investigation has been turned over to the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, with assistance from the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
