UPTON, WYO – A man accused of stealing a firearm and firing shots at a Weston County sheriff’s deputy was arrested Thursday morning following an overnight manhunt south of Upton, Wyoming.
According to the Weston County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began Wednesday evening after a firearm was reported stolen from a vehicle in Newcastle. Deputies tracked the suspect to an area along Highway 116 south of Upton, where they made contact with him around 6:45 p.m.
Authorities say the suspect fled on foot, and shots were fired at a deputy during the encounter. The deputy briefly pursued the man into a rugged ravine but ended the chase because of the difficult terrain.
The search continued throughout the night with assistance from multiple local and state agencies, including the Wyoming Highway Patrol, local law enforcement, search and rescue crews, and emergency responders.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday. Officials say no law enforcement officers or members of the public were injured. The investigation remains ongoing.
