ROSEBUD, S.D. – A 32-year-old Norris man has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for striking another man in the face with a shovel during an altercation on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation.
Chauncy Crow Dog was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon. Federal prosecutors say the incident happened in October 2024 in the Corn Creek community of Mellette County.
According to court documents, Crow Dog witnessed two men fighting outside a residence, then picked up a shovel and struck one of the men in the face. The victim suffered a broken jaw.
Crow Dog was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison and will serve three years of supervised release following his release. He was also ordered to pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case was investigated by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and prosecuted under the Major Crimes Act. Crow Dog was taken into U.S. Marshals Service custody after sentencing.
