The local group opposing a planned 300-acre limestone mine near Piedmont, will hold a public Q&A forum at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, at Elk Creek Lodge. Protect Piedmont’s Future announced State Senator John Carley will moderate, and a legal expert will be available to answer questions at no cost.
The meeting will focus on homeowners’ rights and steps residents can take before the mine begins operations in August 2026. The mine, approved by the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, will be operated by Simon Construction of South Dakota.
Group representative Chris Greenberg emphasized concerns over property values, health impacts, and the mine’s proximity to residential areas.
Protect Piedmont’s Future is pursuing nonprofit status and reports strong community engagement, with residents testing wells and preparing for potential impacts. The group has invited Simon Construction to attend, but the company declined.
