CUSTER, S.D. – Thousands of spectators gathered at Custer State Park Friday for the annual Governor’s Buffalo Roundup, one of South Dakota’s most popular traditions.
The event gives visitors a close-up look at the park’s buffalo herd as riders guide the animals more than five miles into corrals for sorting, tagging, health checks, and other management activities.
Gates opened early in the morning, with many attendees lining up hours in advance. Visitors traveled from across the country to witness the spectacle and learn more about the state’s wildlife conservation efforts.
As the herd approached, spectators could hear the thunder of hooves and the calls of riders directing the buffalo across the prairie.
Officials say the roundup, which has been held for more than 60 years, plays an important role in managing the herd while also showcasing South Dakota’s natural heritage and the importance of preserving wild spaces for future generations.
