RAPID CITY, S.D. – Historians, researchers, and history enthusiasts will gather in Rapid City this week for the 34th Annual West River History Conference.
The two-day event begins Thursday at the Terra Sancta Retreat Center and will feature presentations on topics ranging from the creation of Mount Rushmore to the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Little Bighorn.
Conference President Tim Velder says the event focuses on sharing stories and preserving the history of western South Dakota, eastern Wyoming, and the northern Plains.
Researchers will deliver presentations throughout both days, highlighting significant people, places, and events that have shaped the region.
The conference will also recognize several local historians with awards, including Terrence Smith of Lead, Lori Terrill of Spearfish, and Talli Nauman of Spearfish for their contributions to preserving and promoting regional history.
