New data from the South Dakota Department of Health shows that families in the Bright Start Nurse Home Visiting program see significantly better early childhood health outcomes than the broader Medicaid population.
“These results highlight the power of consistent, supportive relationships early in life,” according to Secretary of Health Melissa Magstadt who added “Bright Start nurses guide families through pregnancy and early childhood, helping them build lasting healthcare habits.”
Bright Start serves first-time pregnant women in eligible counties, offering free nurse home visits from pregnancy through the child’s second birthday. The program is funded through Medicaid, state general funds, and federal grants, and follows the Nurse Family Partnership model.
