SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden and Democratic challenger Dan Ahlers highlighted their differences on several key issues during their final debate of the 2026 campaign Monday.
One major focus was the future of data centers in South Dakota. Ahlers argued local governments should have greater authority over where data centers are built and how they use community resources. Rhoden responded that recently passed state legislation already gives local governments more control while ensuring large data centers pay the costs associated with their power demands.
The candidates also sparred over property taxes and affordability. Rhoden pointed to recently approved property tax relief measures, while Ahlers called for increased state investment in education and changes to the property tax system.
The debate also covered teacher retention, economic development, health care, and tribal relations. Ahlers proposed restoring a tribal relations commission, while Rhoden highlighted what he described as improved partnerships between the state and South Dakota’s tribal governments.
South Dakota voters will make their choice in the general election on November 3.
