RAPID CITY, S.D. – Hundreds of high school students explored future career opportunities Wednesday during Western Dakota Technical College’s annual Career Expo at The Monument in Rapid City.
The event welcomed about 400 juniors and seniors from across western South Dakota, giving them hands-on access to WDTC programs and industry partners. College officials say interest continues to grow in technical education, particularly in healthcare programs and skilled trades such as automotive technology, diesel technology, and electrical work.
WDTC Dean of Enrollment Services Melissa Ginsbach says demand for hands-on career training is increasing as employers face ongoing workforce shortages in the skilled trades. She says several trade programs currently have waiting lists and the college is seeing steady enrollment growth.
Western Dakota currently serves about 1,200 students and reports enrollment is up 4 percent from last year. College officials also say 99 percent of graduates find employment shortly after completing their programs.
As demand continues to rise, WDTC is exploring ways to expand its campus and training facilities to accommodate more students, particularly in trade and healthcare fields. The Career Expo also provided students with information on educational pathways and career planning opportunities.
