RAPID CITY, S.D. – Several participants in Pennington County Drug Court were recognized Wednesday for successfully completing the court-supervised treatment program during a graduation ceremony at the Pennington County Courthouse.
Drug Court serves as an alternative to prison, combining treatment, regular drug testing, and close supervision to help participants overcome substance abuse and avoid further involvement in the criminal justice system.
Officials say the program comes at a critical time, as substance use remains a major challenge across South Dakota. Recent data shows overdose deaths increased in 2024, with methamphetamine and fentanyl among the substances most often involved.
Graduate Jason Fuller credited the program with providing structure, accountability, and support throughout his recovery journey. He says the program gave him an opportunity to rebuild his life while addressing addiction.
Pennington County also operates specialized DUI, Veterans, and Mental Health courts. Officials say Drug Court graduation represents a significant achievement and demonstrates a commitment to long-term recovery and personal responsibility.
