RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City firefighters responded to a reported grass fire on the south slope of M Hill Sunday morning and contained the blaze before it spread.
The Rapid City Fire Department says crews were called to the area near the creek around 8:30 a.m. and discovered two separate fires. The larger fire burned about one-tenth of an acre, while the smaller fire, only a few feet across, had already been extinguished by nearby pedestrians.
Firefighters quickly put out the larger fire, and officials say both fires were contained without any significant damage. Trails in the area remain open to the public.
The exact cause of the fires remains under investigation, but fire officials believe they were human-caused. With dry conditions continuing across the region, the Rapid City Fire Department is reminding residents and visitors to use caution outdoors and properly extinguish or dispose of any materials that could spark a fire.
