RAPID CITY, S.D. – Members of the Rapid Area Vision Education, or RAVE, peer support group will mark White Cane Awareness Day with a community walk through downtown Rapid City on October 15.
Participants will gather at the Rapid City Public Library before walking to Fork Real Community Café for lunch. The event is designed to raise awareness about the independence and mobility of people who are blind or visually impaired.
White Cane Awareness Day was established in 1964 to recognize the achievements and full participation of individuals with visual impairments. As part of the local observance, Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun is expected to issue a proclamation recognizing October 15 as White Cane Awareness Day in the city.
The event will also feature demonstrations of mobility tools, including white canes, guide dogs, and sighted guides. Organizers say community members are encouraged to attend, learn more about visual impairments, and gain a better understanding of how these tools help promote independence and accessibility.
