RAPID CITY, S.D. – Goodwill of the Great Plains will be honored with Rapid City’s 2026 Sustainability Award during Monday night’s Rapid City City Council meeting.
The award, presented by the city’s Sustainability Committee, recognizes Goodwill’s efforts to reduce waste, promote recycling, and support community programs across western South Dakota and the surrounding region.
Committee members say Goodwill diverts millions of pounds of material from landfills each year by reusing, repurposing, and recycling donated items. The organization also operates programs that recycle electronics, paper, fabric, and batteries while creating jobs and supporting local communities.
Sustainability Committee member Heidi Sieverding says Goodwill works to ensure as much donated material as possible is reused or recycled rather than ending up in a landfill. The organization has also been a longtime participant in Rapid City’s annual Earth Day Expo.
The award presentation is scheduled near the beginning of Monday evening’s City Council meeting. The Sustainability Award recognizes businesses, organizations, and individuals who contribute to the environmental, social, and economic well-being of the Rapid City community.
