BOX ELDER, S.D. – Douglas Middle School is calling on students, parents, and staff to work together after school leaders reported an increase in racial slurs and hate symbols being used by students.
In a message sent to families, Principal Sean Gholson said the school has recently seen more incidents involving racial slurs, including the N-word, as well as hate symbols such as swastikas.
Gholson said the behavior is unacceptable and does not reflect the school’s values, noting that such words and symbols cause harm and negatively impact the school community.
School officials say they are investigating reported incidents and enforcing disciplinary consequences under the student code of conduct. Staff members are also discussing the impact of hateful language and symbols with students while increasing supervision in hallways, restrooms, and other common areas.
Administrators are encouraging parents to talk with their children about the harm caused by racial slurs and hate symbols and to reinforce expectations for respectful behavior.
Students are also being urged to report incidents to a trusted staff member.
School leaders say maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment will require a partnership between families, students, and staff.
