RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City residents will have an opportunity to learn more about proposed regulations for data centers and provide feedback during a public open house next week.
The City’s Community Development Department is hosting the event on Wednesday, October 14th, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. Community Development staff will be available to explain the proposed ordinance and answer questions from the public.
The proposed changes would expand on a 2024 city ordinance that defined data centers and allowed them in light industrial and heavy industrial zoning districts.
Under the proposed amendments, the city would establish additional standards addressing issues such as distance from residential areas, power and water usage, sewer demands, and noise and vibration levels. City officials say the goal is to help manage the impacts data centers may have on surrounding neighborhoods and infrastructure.
The Rapid City Planning Commission delayed action on the proposal during its September meeting to allow more time for public review and input. The commission is expected to resume consideration of the ordinance at its November 5th meeting.
City officials encourage residents to attend the open house and share their thoughts on the proposed regulations.
