RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City is on track for one of its strongest construction years ever, with building permit valuations nearing the 400-million-dollar mark.
According to the City’s Building Services Division, 244 building permits were issued in September with a combined value of nearly 34.5 million dollars. Through the first nine months of 2026, the city has issued more than 2,000 permits totaling over 395 million dollars in valuation.
That figure has already surpassed the entire valuation total recorded in 2025 and trails only the record-setting year of 2023, when permit valuations reached more than 463 million dollars.
Community Development Director Vicki Fisher called September a “very solid month” and says the city is on the verge of surpassing 400 million dollars in permit valuation, a milestone that has only been achieved once before in Rapid City history.
Several major projects helped drive the September totals, including nearly five million dollars for the first phase of the Post 320 baseball facility rebuild, more than four million dollars for a new Ma Cualli facility, and large commercial projects for Les Schwab, AutoZone, and Valley 6 Warehouse.
City officials say construction activity has remained steady throughout the year and expect the trend to continue through the final months of 2026.
