RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City man has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison after being convicted of illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
36-year-old Avery Hawk Wing was sentenced September 28th to three years and ten months in federal prison. He will also serve three years of supervised release and pay a one-hundred-dollar special assessment.
Federal prosecutors say a rifle was discovered inside a tote bag belonging to Hawk Wing. During the investigation, he admitted to handling the firearm while searching through the bag, and investigators later found his DNA on multiple areas of the weapon.
Because of a prior felony conviction, Hawk Wing was prohibited under federal law from possessing a firearm.
He was indicted in October 2024 and was found guilty following a three-day jury trial in Rapid City this past July.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, along with the Rapid City Police Department. Hawk Wing was taken into U.S. Marshals custody following his sentencing.
