BOX ELDER, S.D. – State and local leaders gathered this week to celebrate the opening of the Bennett Road Bridge in Box Elder, a project funded through a South Dakota Department of Transportation Bridge Improvement Grant.
Governor Larry Rhoden joined local officials for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, highlighting the bridge’s importance as Box Elder continues to experience rapid growth. Rhoden said the project will help improve traffic flow and provide the infrastructure needed to support future development in the community.
The new bridge is expected to play a key role in serving expanding residential and commercial areas. Officials say traffic volumes on Bennett Road are likely to increase as Box Elder continues to grow.
Since 2010, Box Elder’s population has nearly doubled, and community leaders are preparing for additional growth tied to the expansion of Ellsworth Air Force Base and the arrival of the B-21 bomber mission.
Rhoden also pointed to other recent state investments in the area, including funding for road improvements related to the base expansion and support for the Douglas School District as it works to accommodate rising student enrollment.
State officials say projects such as the Bennett Road Bridge are critical to keeping pace with growth, reducing congestion, and ensuring communities have the infrastructure needed for long-term development.
