Both chambers of Congress voted Tuesday to approve legislation requiring the Department of Justice to release its files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender whose case has drawn national scrutiny.
The House overwhelmingly passed the bill 427-1, with South Dakota Rep. Dusty Johnson voting in favor. “Jeffrey Epstein is a monster,” Johnson said. “We needed momentum to get this vote, and today we got it.”
Johnson acknowledged the bill isn’t perfect but said the Senate offered a chance for improvements. However, shortly after his remarks, the Senate passed the measure without changes, sending it to the President’s desk.
Sen. Mike Rounds voiced support for the release but emphasized the importance of protecting victims’ privacy. “I would support appropriate legislation authorizing the release of the files while protecting victims’ privacy,” Rounds said in a statement.
The legislation includes provisions aimed at safeguarding victim identities.
