CUSTER, S.D. – The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission is expected to approve a new concessionaire contract for Custer State Park this week, selecting Xanterra Travel Collection to oversee lodging, dining, retail, and other visitor services.
Xanterra would replace U.S. Hotel and Resort Management, a South Dakota-based company that has operated the park’s resort facilities for the past 20 years.
Commission members say the change is aimed at preparing for future growth as annual visitation at Custer State Park has climbed to more than 2.3 million visitors. Officials believe the new contract will help meet increasing visitor expectations and support the park’s long-term needs.
Four companies submitted proposals for the contract. After a review process that included written proposals and interviews, Xanterra was selected as the preferred bidder.
Ramkota Companies, the parent company of U.S. Hotel and Resort Management, expressed disappointment with the decision but said it remains proud of its work managing the park’s resorts over the last two decades.
The commission is expected to take final action on the contract during its meeting Thursday.
