RAPID CITY, S.D. – Thousands gathered in Rapid City over the weekend as Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrations got underway with a downtown parade and the start of the 38th Annual Black Hills Powwow.
Crowds lined the streets Saturday for the Indigenous Peoples’ Day parade, featuring dozens of floats and community entries. At The Monument, more than 2,000 dancers participated in the opening of the Black Hills Powwow, filling Summit Arena for one of the region’s largest Native American cultural events.
Powwow organizers say the annual gathering is a time for fellowship, reconnecting with family and friends, and celebrating the traditions of song and dance. Saturday’s events included the Veterans Grand Entry, posting of the colors, and the Dancers Grand Entry.
The Black Hills Powwow ended yesterday at The Monument. Meanwhile, Indigenous Peoples’ Day events conclude Monday with NDN Collective’s annual celebration at Main Street Square, featuring speakers, vendors, family activities, and a free concert highlighted by a performance from Macklemore.
