South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden officially launched his campaign Tuesday for a full term, joining a crowded Republican field ahead of the June 2026 primary.
Rhoden, 66, assumed office in January after former Gov. Kristi Noem became Homeland Security secretary. A longtime rancher and former National Guard member, Rhoden previously served six years as lieutenant governor and held seats in both the state House and Senate.
He faces several challengers, including U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson, businessman Toby Doeden, and House Speaker Jon Hansen. In deep-red South Dakota, the GOP primary winner is typically favored in the general election.
Rhoden’s platform includes property tax relief, public safety, and continued support for low taxes, gun rights, and anti-abortion policies. His most notable achievement this year was securing legislative approval for a $650 million plan to replace the state’s aging penitentiary.
“I’m focused on keeping South Dakota strong, safe and free,” Rhoden said during his announcement in Rapid City, flanked by family.
Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen praised Rhoden as a “steady, responsible” leader. Rhoden continues to operate his family ranch near Union Center and has spent the year promoting economic development across the state.
